Chief Minister of Gilgit-Baltistan Urges Prime Minister to Deploy Motorway Police on Karakoram Highway After Deadly Chilas Bus Accident

In a letter to Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif, Chief Minister Gulbar Khan of Gilgit Baltistan (GB) urged the deployment of highway police on the Karakoram Highway (KKH).

The deployment of highway police, according to Chief Minister Gulbar Khan, is crucial for safe driving on the Karakoram Highway, which has recently seen a number of deadly incidents. According to Gulbar, he has mandated that steps be made to stop such events in the future and has requested an investigation into the current disaster at Chilas.

There has been an increase in traffic accidents on the Karakoram Highway, which has cost many lives. The Chief Minister stated that these mishaps are harming Gilgit Baltistan’s tourism industry in addition to taking lives.

Increased traffic accidents on the crucial Karakoram Highway have a negative effect on both the tourism industry in Gilgit Baltistan and human life.

A serious incident that occurred in December of last year, with unknown assailants targeting a bus headed towards Rawalpindi near Chilas, brought attention to this issue. At least 10 people, including two soldiers, were killed and 21 others were injured when the bus lost control during the attack and collided with a vehicle.

Captain (Rtd) Arif Ahmad, Deputy Commissioner of Diamer, said that the attack resulted in the bus crashing with a truck, resulting in several fatalities and highlighting the security issues in the region.
